Summary

Objective: This study was planned to examine

the demographic characteristics of children with

cerebral palsy (CP) and of their families.

Material and Methods: In this study, the

demographic characteristics of children with

cerebral palsy (CP) and of their families were

investigated retrospectively in 104 children who

were hospitalized for rehabilitation in Ankara

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Education and

Research Hospital, Pediatric Clinic between January-

August 2006. Age, sex, age at diagnosis, clinical

type and social, cultural and economic

characteristics of families were examined.

Results: Mean age of the children was 6.8

±2.4 years (min:4-max:12); 31 (29.8%) were

females and 73 (70.2%) were males. 54 of the

children (52.0%) were diagnosed in the first year of

life and 26 (25.0%) in the second year. When the

clinical type of CP was investigated, the most

common type was spastic type with 73.1%. Ages

of the mothers were between 26-40 and the

fathers between 31-40. 67 families (64.4%) were

living outside Ankara while 37 (35.6%) lived in

Ankara. 46 families (44.2%) had sufficient

knowledge about CP.

Conclusion: The high prevalance of CP in our

country requires that the demographic

characteristics of children with CP and of their

families be elucidated. Determination of

demographic characteristics may contribute to

designate effective rehabilitation targets.
