Summary

Introduction: Gifted students, who are identified with their advanced capacities compared to their peers, mostly receive training regarding contents in the field of cognitive development. In this regard, while the learning experiences of these students regarding physical and motor areas are limited, competencies of teachers also limited in these areas who works in special education institutions for gifted students. The aim of the study was to examine ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) processes of a physical activity integration program for gifted students’ teachers.

Method: ADDIE stages of teacher training programme were examined by multiphase mixed method design. Considering criterion sampling method, 46 teachers (24 in treatment group, 22 in control group) participated in the study. After the content of program was designed based on need analysis, the trainings and a workshop were implemented by experts. A knowledge test and self- assessment scale specific to the training program content were applied to treatment and control groups as pre- and post-tests. After implementation, program outcomes were followed through repeated interviews with teachers. Qualitative data were obtained through project documents, expert opinions-field notes, written interview forms, individual and focus group interviews. Quantitative data were collected with a knowledge test and a self-assessment scale. Qualitative data were analyzed with thematic analysis based on credibility strategies, and quantitative data were analyzed with Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests.

Results: As a result of the need analysis, seven main themes found as follow: "Play Needs in Learning Environment", "Active Life Needs", "Knowledge and Skill Needs for Teachers", "Support for Multidimensional Development", "Traditional Understanding of Education", "Perceived Barriers" and "Needs Concerning Socio-ecological Problems”. Based on the need analysis results, the program designed considering topics such as physical activity, educational games, sports pedagogy, psychology, exercise in children and adaptations for gifted children. Improvements were made in accordance with teacher opinions and suggestions obtained through interim measurements. In addition, these improvements were integrated into the workshop program. After implementation of trainings, the knowledge test scores and self-assesment levels of treatment group showed statistically significant difference with moderate-large effect sizes (r=.355-.875) compared to the control group (p<.05). In addition, after periodically repeated interviews with teachers, four main themes were determined as follow: "Change in Teachers", "Change in Students", "Social Patterns", "Ongoing Barriers and Unfavourableness ". Under these main themes, multi-dimensional sub- themes such as adaptations and strategies specific to gifted environment, content and pedagogical field knowledge development, diversified activity content, bee teachers: socio-ecological transfer, limitations of facility/materials and organizational support, widespread impact and sustainability were identified.

Conclusion and Recommendations: The training program was designed considering the specific characteristics of gifted students and their teachers in physical activity and motor areas. It is recommended to increase the learning experiences and contents regarding to physical and motor activity in gifted environment. Programs should include relevant areas in pre-service and in- service teacher trainings, and socio-ecology of special education institutions’ should be designed accordingly.
