Özet
Melâhat Özgü (1906-2001) is one of the critics who published translation criticism in Tercüme (1940-1966), the translation journal published by The Translation Bureau (1940-1967) established under the auspices of the Ministry of Education in the early republican period in Turkey. This study aims at making Özgü visible as one of the most productive “agents” (Toury, 2002) of criticism in Tercüme. To this end, first the position and role of Özgü as a female critic in Tercüme will be discussed through her biography and her works of criticism published in the journal. Our research has revealed that Özgü as an agent contributed immensely to the improvement of critical writing in the journal. Secondly, Özgü’s critical texts (8) will be examined to question her approach towards translation criticism. Our analysis on Özgü’s texts have disclosed that, she conducted comparative textual study between source and target texts together with extratextual study in order to evaluate translations within their socio-cultural and literary contexts. Thus, we argue that Özgü adopted a holistic approach in her translation criticisms.
