EFFECTS OF SOME LEGUME FORAGE CROPS USED FOR GREEN MANURE BETWEEN CHERRY TREES ON THE YIELD AND SOME OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
Project no. 20506 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019
Summary

This study was conducted between 2017-2019 in a 8-year-old sweet cherry orchard (Prunus avium L.) in Karamürsel district in Kocaeli. Three different forage crop species (Vicia sativa L., Vicia faba L., Lolium multiflorum Lam.) were raised between drive rows of the trees as both forage and green manure. Herbage yield and other yield characteristics of the forage crops, development of the cherry trees and chemical properties of the soil were investigated.

Results obtained from the investigation displayed that Vicia faba had the highest vegetation height, Vicia sativa and Vicia faba resulted the highest herbage yield, dry matter yield, crude protein ratio and crude protein yield; while Lolium multiflorum showed the highest dry matter ratio.

Our results showed that the highest soil nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium obtained from the conventional practice while Vicia sativa had the highest soil organic matter. Treatments and crops had no effect on soil pH.

Results obtained from cherry trees showed, Conventional practice provided the highest yield, shoot length and shoot diameter, Vicia faba resulted the highest trunk diameter growth. There was no significant difference in soluble solid content.

In light of these results, it was concluded that Vicia sativa and Vicia faba plants can be used for both green manure or forage production without too much impacting the growth and yield of the trees in a cherry orchard.
