Summary

Abstract In this project work entitled “Linguistic Analysis of the Machine Translation Process of Technical Texts (SGA-2019-20707)” funded by the Scientific Research Projects (BAP) Coordination of Ege University, I addressed German-Turkish translation methods. For this purpose, I aimed to specify the translation methods from German into Turkish and to develop important guiding methods for written translation processes through these methods. In Turkey there are many studies in the field of translation studies. However, a study that addresses the practice of translation studies, or more accurately, a study that examines translation studies with linguistic aspects, has not yet been addressed by either German or Turkish researchers. The fact that this is the first time such a research has been done in a scientific way demonstrates the importance of the research I intended to do. The "Linguistic analysis of the machine translation process of technical texts" focuses on offline translation tools. The main goal of our project is to analyze the methods of the translation process from German into Turkish of online and offline translation tools for technical texts used globally and to write a linguistic project in which we compare the translations using these tools with the translations that have been made using the schemes developed by Mehmet Tahir Öncü for the language pair German-Turkish. The first main part of the study is the theoretical part. In the first part, Öncü’s translation schemes are explained for each German sentence type specifically. Afterwards, offline and online tools are introduced. The second main part of the study explains the methods and procedures to be applied in practice before moving on to the applied section. The 40 sentences identified in the first phase are translated into Turkish using Öncü's translation schemes and analyzed. In the second phase the 40 sentences determined are translated with the offline translation tools. In the third phase, the 40 sentences determined are translated into Turkish using the online tools. The results of the offline translation tools are compared with the results of the online translation tools. In the final phase, the texts translated with Öncü’s translation schemes are compared with the results translated with online and offline translation tools, and the benefits of the schemes are highlighted in the final section. The aim of this study is to bring the fields of translation and linguistics together, focusing on functional and interdisciplinary features. The overall aim of this study is to use the results obtained in practice in translation education and in the translation process.
