Summary

The increasing application of infrastructures such as high-level nuclear waste repositories, energy geostructures, and deep foundations has highlighted the importance of understanding the thermo-mechanical behavior of clay soils. Exposure to elevated temperatures under varying stress states can significantly alter soil response. This thesis investigates the effect of confining pressure on thermally induced deformations in normally consolidated clays through thermally controlled oedometer and shear box tests. The results indicate that thermo-mechanical behavior is strongly governed by the mechanical properties and mineralogical composition of the clay, as well as the prevailing stress state. The findings contribute to an improved understanding of clay behavior under coupled thermal and mechanical loading and provide practical implications for the design and stability assessment of thermo-active geotechnical structures in soft clay deposits.
