THE EFFECT OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS TRAINING ON STUDENT NURSES ON ANGER, ANGER EXPRESSION STYLE AND ASSERTIVENESS

Project no. 862 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

Background: Nurses, who work with patients and healthcare team personally, often face conflicts. For this reason, nurses should have an assertive attitude and they must be able to regulate their anger. This is important for the future nurses to be prepared with this kind of abilities. Aim: The research was planned to investigate the effect of communication skills training on anger, anger expression style and assertiveness levels of student nurses. Method: The quantitative and interventional study was conducted in the 2017-18 academic year .The universe was formed 297 nursing students at second grade level and of the 16 students whose State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI)-State Anger dimension scores were above the average were sample of the study. The independent variable of the research ‘Communication Skills Education’ which planned with eclectic approach was applied in 10 sessions. Data were collected by using Sociodemographic Form, Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) and STAXI with repeated before and after intervention and follow-up measurements. While evaluation of data, descriptive statistics, Friedman test, repeated measures Anova and linear regression testing were performed. Results:The difference between pre-post and follow-up test scores of STAXI Trait-Anger (F=12,080, p=0.001), Anger Control (F=3,347, p=0.049), Anger-Out (F=6,884, p=0.003), Anger-In (F=5,390, p=0.010) was statistically significant (p<0.05). Further analysis showed that the significant difference was due to posttest scores. The difference between the RAS scores was statistically meaningful both short and long term (X2= 17,208,p=0.000,p<0.05). Follow-up scores of the RAS showed significant regression with the STAXI–Anger-In scores (R2=0.495, p=0.02). Discussion: While the eclectic Communication Skills Education created decreasing on nursing student’s state anger, the results of the research had revealed that students felt more controlled over anger, turn the anger to themselves and reflect to outside, to a lesser extent. While the education has increased students' levels of assertiveness, the persistence was also high. One of the important results of the research was the necessities of the implementation of procedures which encourage creativity include art and action in education programs. The upgrade of interventions in order to increase the persistence of the effect on anger and repeating this study with different and large sample groups by using qualitative research methods are recommended.
