PREPARATION OF MAGNETICALLY ACTIVE HYBRID ORGANIC/INORGANIC SORBENT AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION ON HEAVY METAL REMOVAL
Project no. 491 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
In this work, sulfonated cellulose and sulfonated cellulose-magnetite hybrid sorbent were prepared and applied for Cu2+ removal from water. The effects of sorbent dose and initial solution pH on the removal of Cu2+ were investigated. In addition, ion exchange mechanism and reaction kinetics were investigated by modeling with adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies. The copper analysis was performed by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). When the sulfonated cellulose was used, the optimum sorbent for Cu2+ removal found as 0.05 g, and the working pH range found ? 4. In case of sulfonated cellulose-magnetite hybrid sorbent, optimum sorbent dose was found to be 0.2 g and the working pH range was ? 4. Kinetic studies showed that removal kinetics of both sorbents is fast and in 15 minutes complete removal of Cu2+ achieved. The experimental data were well-fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and isotherm sorption data displayed a good correlation with the Langmuir model. Removal of Cu2+ by prepared sorbents was a spontaneous process (?G<0). The sulfonated cellulose can be regenerated with 0.1 M HCl while 0,5 M H2SO4 solution is suitable for hybrid sorbent regeneration.
