DETERMINING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SURFACE TEMPERATURES AND PARK CHARACTERISTICS IN URBAN SPACES BY REMOTE SENSING DATA
Project no. 328 · Status: Kapanmış · 2015
Summary
Urban green spaces with their cooling effect may help abate urban heat islands (UHI) effect and decrease the energy demand and cost for cooling in summer season. However, how characteristics of parks affect the park cooling impact (PCI) is not very clear and needs further studies. In this study, 39 urban parks in the Bornova district of Izmir have been studied. Surface temperatures (LST) and land cover-use values have been obtained from Landsat and Wolrdwiev-2 satellite images and correlation between surface temperatures and land use-cover has been statistically investigated. Findings suggest that although there is a positive correlation between park size and cooling effect, correlation is not statistically significant. Besides, shape of the park has a positive impact on cooling effect, as it gets closer from irregular to compact.
