INVESTIGATION OF FATIGUE CHARACTERISTIC IN NANO REINFORCED COMPOSITE MATERIALS
Project no. 707 · Status: Kapanmış · 2015
Summary
In this study, various rates of carbon nanotubes (CNT) (0.5- % 0.75- % 1 and % 1.25%) in weight with respect to epoxy resin added to plain weave glass fabric reinforced epoxy resin composite. The effect of carbon nanotubes addition to composite material’s mechanical and fatigue strength was investigated. For this purpose, tensile tests, three point bending tests and tension-tension fatigue tests were performed. Homogenous carbon nanotubes dispersion in epoxy resin was done with the help of ultrasonic mixer. Without carbon nanotubes added and various rates of nanocarbon contain composite plates were produced with hand lay-up techniques, after that all specimens were cut by water jet according to ASTM standard. In tension-tension fatigue test, carbon nanotubes addition affects the composite materials’ fatigue behavior. Tension-tension fatigue tests were done at room temperature, stress ratio ( ) equal to 0.1. Three different stress levels were selected. These stresses were 50, 40 and 30 % of the specimens’ tensile strength. Test frequency was selected 5 Hz. According to tests results, carbon nanotubes added composite materials tensile, bending behavior has changed. Considering the weight of the addition ratio, 0.75% carbon nanotubes containing specimens’ modulus of elasticity increased. In all specimens, the longest fatigue life was seen from pure specimen in 30% of stress level according to static test result. Fatigue life was decreased with carbon nanotube addition.
