Investigation of Slow Pyrolysis Conditions in the Conversion of Olive Pruning Wastes to Biosorbent and Modification for Boron Removal
Project no. 22494 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020
Summary
Boron is a widely distributed element in nature and often appears in the form of boric acid or borate salts. Boric acid and borates are used as raw materials in the manufacture of glass, soap, detergents, cosmetics, photographic chemicals and flame retardants, and as neutron absorbers for nuclear facilities. Boron is known as one of the essential elements for living plants, animals and humans. However, larger amounts of boron can be harmful to animal and plant life. Boron is one of the most toxic elements polluting irrigation waters in Turkey. Heavy metals, which are formed as a result of industrial processes, mix with soil, water and atmosphere, affect the life of living organisms and cause environmental pollution. Heavy metal ions in wastewater, which are stored in organisms and enter food chains, must be brought into compliance with standards by subjecting them to certain processes, since they are not biodegradable and destroyed. Boron pollution of water is a serious environmental problem. Boron is difficult to remove from water and can be very expensive and impractical. One or more methods can be applied due to the boron concentration in the environment. Advanced purification methods such as adsorption and ion exchange should be used to obtain low boron concentration. Removal of heavy metals in wastewater by adsorption method is a more efficient and economical method than other methods depending on the type of adsorbent. The aim of this thesis is to investigate boron removal from aqueous solutions by developing environmentally friendly adsorbents. Thus, the waste can be removed with waste, and in this way, in the next stage, these adsorbents will be used for boron removal from geothermal water, and it will be ensured that these waters can be used as irrigation water in agricultural lands.
