Summary

ABSTRACT The genus Glaucium Adans. is represented by seven species in our country. It is known by the common names such as “boynuzlu gelincik” and “boynuzlu haşhaş” in Turkey. Glaucium species are rich sources of isoquinoline alkaloids such as glaucine, protopine and corydine which have been proven to possess important biological activities. In the present study, the alkaloidal extracts of Glaucium leiocarpum, G. flavum, G. acudidentatum, G. corniculatum, G. corniculatum subsp. corniculatum, G. corniculatum subsp. refractum, G. hausknechti, G. grandiflorum, G. grandiflorum var. grandiflorum ve G. grandiflorum var. torquatum taxa, collected from 33 different localities, were prepared and their chemical profiles were invesitigated by GC-MS (Gaz Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry). The acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase and prolyl oligopeptidase inhibitory activity potentials of all the samples were determined. Moreover, isolation and structure elucidation studies were carried out on Glaucium flavum species collected from Antalya. The alkaloids namely, isocorydine, protopine, dihydrosanguinarine, glaucine and dehydroglaucine were isolated and their structures were elucidated. Biological activity studies of the alkaloids were also determined. As a result of the studies carried out in our project, a comprehensive chemotaxonomic study was realized for the first time on Glaucium species, considered as a biological wealth of our country. The obtained results were used to update and enrich in house library “GC-MS Library of Isoquinoline Alkaloids” which was formed by us. Glaucine, isocorydine and allocryptine were found as major alkaloids in most of the samples and interesting findings were obtained when different taxa and different specimens of same taxon collected from different localities, were compared. In conclusion, all of these achievements may throw light upon new projects relevant to this issue.
