Investigation of the Role of Maresin 1 in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Progression

Project no. 31861 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2023

Summary

Lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer worldwide and ranks second among cancer-related deaths. The inflammatory microenvironment plays an important role in both the initiation and progression of lung cancer. Therefore, the resolution of inflammation is an important therapeutic target in lung cancer treatment. Many molecules participate in the process of inflammation resolution. Among these molecules, Maresin 1 contributes to the resolution of inflammation by regulating both microenvironment-associated macrophages and inflammatory cytokine responses. However, the effects of Maresin 1 on lung cancer progression remain unknown.

In our study, we demonstrated that macrophages stimulated by Maresin 1 and exposed to a TNF-α–induced inflammatory environment affect the proliferation of non-small cell lung cancer cells, and that this effect occurs in parallel with changes in cytokine levels. Notably, Maresin 1 was shown to suppress cytokine levels and to reduce the survival advantage of cancer cells in the presence of Maresin 1.In addition, cytokine expression was investigated in human non-small cell lung cancer tissue samples. TNF-α levels, in particular, were found to be significantly higher in non-small cell lung cancer tissue compared to healthy tissue.

In conclusion, our study reveals for the first time in the literature the role of Maresin 1 in non-small cell lung cancer and shows that it may be a promising molecule in lung cancer development occurring within an inflammatory microenvironment by modulating the tumor microenvironment.
