IMPROVING NEW METHODS FOR IDENTIFICAION OF HIGH PERFORMANCE FIBERS
Project no. 1079 · Status: Kapanmış · 2015
Summary
Synthetic fibers are used today in the field of clothing, home and technical textiles, and their share in the market is increasing every year. Worldwide production of synthetic fibers in 2017 has exceeded to 65.000.000 tons. When the areas of use is considered, the use of technical textiles seems to be much higher than in the past. Depending on the applications and requirements, in addition to classical synthetic fibers, a large number of high performance new fibers have been produced in recent years, especially for technical textiles. Companies do not provide sufficient information about these fibers which they have obtained as a result of extensive researches for many years. This makes it difficult to identify new high performance fibers. There is no international standard for identifying these fibers. Currently, the directive in the European Union for the analysis of fiber mixtures does not meet today's requirements as there are many changes in fiber production. In addition, many changes that occur in fiber production are not uniform in the analysis of fibers, making testing laboratories difficult in the definition of high performance fibers. This project has tried to give detailed information about the properties and end use of many high performance and high temperature resistant fibers used today and tried to develop methods of recognition of such fibers with greater precision. For this purpose, the analytical methods used widely in the field of polymer have been studied on the identification of fibers. We have tried to create data for the identification of high performance fibers which can be obtained by using thermal analysis such as TGA, DSC, SEM and FTIR devices widely used in the field of materials. For this type of high performance fibers, it has been determined that a single method is not sufficient and that the outputs of several methods needed to be compared. While the project has made a significant contribution to this issue, it is of great importance to continue working on other fibers and blends.
