Investigation on Short Time and One Step Microwave Carbonization Activation of Nonwoven Tekstiles Produced From Textile Wastes and Its Applicability for Electromagnetic Shilding
Project no. 23918 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022
Summary

Due to the increasing world population and wrong consumption habits, wastes are increasing dramaticaly, and the disposal and reuse of wastes are becoming more and more important day by day. In the circular economy, these wastes are not considered to be disposed of, but rather as an input to another production process. From this point of view, it is aimed in this project to transform textile wastes into a value-added product with electromagnetic shielding feature. For this purpose, nonwoven fabric from cotton and jute textile wastes was carbonized and activated in a single step with ferric chloride in the microwave. Although the formation of activated carbon with ferric chloride is a subject that has been studied in the literature, the materials are powder and dry, and traditional heating methods have also been used in these studies. In this project, unlike the literature, textile was transformed into activated carbon fabric in a short time wet and without using inert gas in the microwave without deteriorating its 3-dimensional structure. Ferric chloride is more environmentally friendly and more economical than other activation chemicals. Due to its polar structure, it can be used as an absorbent providing homogeneous heating in the microwave. Fe3O4 was produced in-situ with FeCl3, which can promote the formation of micropores. The maximum surface area (789.90 m2 /g) was obtained with carbon containing 5% FeCl3. Functional groups-surface chemistry, porosity, morphology, thermal stability and conductivity were made by XPS, XRD, BET, SEM-EDX, TGA, Four Probe analysis. Carbonized nonwovens have an average EM shielding efficiency of 20 dB (99%) in the 1-6 GHz range. Electromagnetic shielding have occurred by magnetic loss, internal reflections, and absorption dominant mechanism. In addition to the originality of the experimental system and method, the concept of eco-cube is presented to the literature as an ecological and economic decision-making tool. In addition, PMI, Specific Energy, Specific EMI Efficiency (SSE) and absolute efficiency (SSE/t) are also presented to draw attention to the importance of these issues. One of the main motivation of this project is to draw attention to the importance of these metrics and to ensure their dissemination.
