Removal of Antimony (V) from aqueous solutions by Electrodeionization (EDI) method
Project no. 24201 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022
Summary

This study investigated the removal of antimony from aqueous solutions using the electrodeionization (EDI) method. The effects of various parameters on Sb(V) removal in the EDI system were examined, including applied potential, feed solution flow rate, Na2SO4 concentration supplied to the electrode compartment, and the presence of foreign ions.

The removal rate of Sb(V) is influenced by the applied potential. When a potential of 50 V was applied, the Sb(V) concentration decreased from 5 mg/L to 9 µg/L. The flow rate of the Sb(V)-containing solution also has an impact on the removal rate. At a flow rate of 1 L/h, the removal rate was 98%, and it increased to 99% at flow rates of 2 L/h and 3 L/h.

The Na2SO4 concentration supplied to the electrode compartment also affected the remaining Sb(V) concentration in the solution. At a Na2SO4 concentration of 0.005 M, the Sb(V) concentration in the solution was 140 µg/L, whereas it decreased below 20 µg/L when the concentration was increased to 0.01 M or 0.05 M.

In the presence of singly charged ions such as Cl- and NO3- alongside Sb(V), the Sb(V) concentration could be reduced below 20 µg/L. However, in the presence of SO42- and PO43-, the Sb(V) concentration remained above the limit value of 20 µg/L established by the World Health Organization for drinking water.

Keywords: Antimony, Electrodeionization, Electromembrane process, Ion exchange resin, Water treatment
