Evaluation of Rosmarinus officinalis L. Plant for Phytotherapy
Project no. 242 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
Rosmarinus officinalis L. is a perennial plant in the form of shrubs belonging to the Lamiaceae. Traditionally used in constipation, biliary problems and diuretic. Rosmarinus officinalis have been scientifically proven to possess antioxidant, anticancer, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antiulser and antidepressant effects. In this study, four samples were supplied from herbal shops (RO2, RO3) and pharmacy (RO4, RO5), one natural sample was collected from Ciceklikoy-Izmir (RO1). All of the samples were examined according to the European Pharmacopoeia. Loss on drying, total ash and ash insoluble in HCl were calculated. Thin Layer Chromatography was performed with rosmarinic acid and caffeic acid standards. The spectrophotometric determination of total hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives has been performed. Generally, all samples have been found to be suitable with the standards of the pharmacopoeia. The sample of the code RO4 has the highest percentage lose in drying, total ash and insoluble ash in HCl percentage. The caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid used as the evidence of thin-layer chromatography have also been identified in all tested samples. Total hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives have been found to have the highest content of the code RO1 sample collected from nature as a result of the spectrophotometric quantitation calculated from rosmarinic acid.
