Optimization of the Qualified Nursery Tree Production in Mastic Tree (Pistacia lentiscus var. chia Duham.)

Project no. 21730 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020

Summary

Mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus var. chia Duham.) is an evergreen, diocieus, medicinal-aromatic plant belonging to Sumac family (Anacardiaceae). It is a known fact that, it has been cultivated at the south of Chios Island for centruies, but it has also been grown in Çeşme peninsula in a limited scale. The resin (mastic) and essential oil of mastic tree is being used in many industries nowadays. In recent years the interest to mastic tree has been gradually increased and this case resulted with the increment in demand to qualified nursery tree in Turkey. In mastic tree cultivation only male trees heve been used. For this reason, clonal propagation is necessary. In this work, it was studied the propagation by semi-hardwood cuttings which is the most proper method for mass-propagation of mastic tree and the optimization of qualified nursery tree production as well. Rooting hormones such as IBA and it’s combinations with NAA were applied to cuttings that collected in mid-February and mid-March. The highest rooting percentage (74.6%) was obtained from the cuttings collected in mid-February and treated with 30 g l-1 IBA. As for the control cuttings, the rooting as 11.3% was measured. Highest mean root number (3.4) of cuttings was obtained with IBA+NAA (10+1 g l-1) treatment, while 10 g l-1 IBA gave the highest figures of the other variables such as root length and root fresh/dry weights. The entire figures of the rooting variables in mid-March cuttings were found to be remarkably lower than the mid-February ones. On the other hand, to predict the auxin sensitive phase of rooting, the highest figures of rooting variables were reached in cuttings at the 5th day fallowing planting, but the measured figures significantly decreased at 10 and 15th day of rooting. The slow release fertilizer (8-9 month) applied to container media of the nursery plants obtained from cuttings, resulted with measuring the highest figures of growth variables at the highest rate (9 g l-1) of fertilizer.
