Project no. 678 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
Background: The complex and challenging nature of contemporary health services draws attention to strategies such as mindfulness, meditation and yoga that enhance the well-being of healthcare workers and increase the potential for flexibility. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of yoga on mindfulness and self-compassion among nursing students. Methods: The study population was composed of all the nursing students (n:47) who were currently enrolled in first grade and selected the “yoga” elective course in 20172018 education year. The research used a quasi-experimental single group pretest-posttest design. It was intended to reach the entire population without using sample selection. All the students participated the study. The data were collected using “Sociodemographic data form”, “Mindful Attention Awareness Scale”, “Self-Compassion Scale”. The data were collected from the students using the survey methods at the yoga classroom. Results: All of the participants were female students between the ages of 18-21 in the first grade. Less than one quarter (14.89%) of the students had been practicing yoga before. The most frequent three reasons for choosing yoga elective course were determined as follows; curiosity (57.45%), personal development (53.19%) and relaxation (53.19%). While the mean score of “Mindful Attention Awareness Scale” of the students was 60.51 ± 11.35 in pretest, the mean score increased to 63.7 ± 8.75 in the post test (p <0.05). While the total scale score of the students' self-compassion scale was 3.37 ± 0.69 in the pretest, the total scale score increased to 3.50 ± 0.53 in the post test (p <0.05). A statistically significant relationship was found between mindful attention awareness and self-compassion scale scores (r = 0.162). Conclusion: While the students' self-compassion was found to be “moderate” before yoga, it was found to be “high” after yoga. At the end of the yoga course, mindful attention awareness of the students was found to be higher than before the course. The higher the mindful attention awareness level of the students, the higher the level of selfcompassion. Key Words: nursing students, yoga, mindfulness, self-compassion
