Identifying the influence of Mellittin mutations/polymorphismcs over Apis Mellifera venom variations isolated from different geographic regions.
Project no. 30806 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2023
Summary

Nowadays, apitherapy is defined as the use of bee products for the protection and treatment of human, animal and plant health. Although honey is the most important product obtained from bees, other products such as pollen, royal jelly, propolis and bee venom are essential for human health as well. According to the data coming from recent research studies, the products have antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer effects, which are used for development of alternative medicine. Bee venom is the subject of the project, has been used in the Middle East for more than 6000 years. However, we have a limited knowledge about its protein content and genetics. In our previous study, samples of Anatolian Bee (Apis mellifera anatoliaca) venom were collected and characterized for its chemical content and bioactivity from different geographical regions in Turkey. In addition, first detailed research carried out to determine the venom quality of Apis mellifera anatoliaca venom resulted that the variations would be genetical, therefore the Mellitin gene variations/mutations were studied in this research to better understand the biology of the variation of the venom samples.

In this research project, mutations in the melittin gene, which is one of the most important venom component, were identified and correlated with previous research data to map the genetic variations between samples. Since this is the first study about venom content and genetics of honeybees in Turkey, the data obtained from the project will provided precious data for the development of beekeeping in our country. Hence, our study is a continuation of our previous research, it was important that to reveal the protein content and genomic data of bee venom on a regional basis. Ultimately, the project aim has fulfilled the purpose of providing basic information for the standardization of bee venom and its further development into apicutical products.
