Use of Polystyrene Divinylbenzene Grafted with Glycidyl Methacrylate and Functionalized with Mercapto Succinic Acid as a Sorbent in the Removal of Methylene Blue from Waters

Project no. 32497 · Status: Kapanmış · 2024

Summary

Colored impurities found in wastewater contribute significantly to environmental pollution, necessitating the research of new methods for their effective removal. Dyes are among the most common pollutants of water. Methylene Blue (MM) is a dye widely used in the textile, paper, medical, biological, chemical, aquarium and aquaculture, and cosmetic industries, and contributes to water pollution. In this study, a polystyrene divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) sorbent grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and functionalized with mercapto succinic acid (MSA) will be used to remove MM from water. PS-DVB, grafted with GMA and functionalized with MSA, was chosen due to its advantages such as high adsorbent capacity, effective results with small amounts, and reusability. The efficiency and analytical performance of the synthesized sorbent in removing methylene blue from water will be evaluated. Within this scope, pH-dependent adsorption efficiency, adsorption capacity dependent on sorbent amount, sorbent-sample contact time, temperature-dependent thermodynamic analyses, selectivity studies with different dyes, recovery, and real-sample analyses will be conducted. As a result of this research, the usability of PS-DVB, grafted with GMA and functionalized with MSA, as an effective sorbent for methylene blue removal will be evaluated.

Keywords: Methylene Blue, Glycidyl Methacrylate, Mercapto Succinic Acid, Polystyrene Divinylbenzene, Adsorption, Wastewater Treatment
