PRODUCTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NANO PARTICLE REINFORCED METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES USING SPARK PLASMA SINTERING

Project no. 1245 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017

Summary

Within the scope of this project, the production of nano- and micro-sized particle reinforced magnesium metal matrix composite materials by mechanical alloying and then by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Microstructure imaging and physical and mechanical properties of nano and micro particle reinforced composites with Mg matrix produced were examined. For this purpose, density, hardness and compression tests were applied to the materials. Due to the SPS process, highly pure Mg and nano and micro-reinforced composites could be obtained. The densities of the particle reinforced composites decreased as the reinforcement particle amount increased. However, the hardness of nano and microparticle reinforced composites was higher than pure magnesium and it was observed that the hardness values increased as the amount of reinforcement particles increased. However, depending on the clustering caused by the increase in the amount of reinforcement, the rate of increase in the hardness of micro and nano reinforced composites started to decrease. The fracture images of micro and nano reinforced composites at the end of the compression test showed that the composites produced had ductile fracture behavior.
