DETERMINATION OF MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS WITH FLAX FIBER EPOXY ADDED NANOCLAY
Project no. 75589 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022
Summary

The rapid development of technology and the increase in environmental problems such as global warming have increased the importance of natural fiber reinforced composites in order to support sustainable development goals.

In this thesis, thermoset matrix epoxy materials reinforced with linen fabrics, one of the natural fibers, were produced as nanoclay reinforced composite plates by using vacuum infusion method. Mechanical properties of samples obtained from plates; tensile test, three-point bending test and shear test. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) methods were applied. The internal structure and nanoclay distribution of the composites were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

The optimal amount of nanoclay results in an increase in the modulus of elasticity with better interfacial bonding and force transfer. The highest modulus of elasticity and tensile strength were determined in composite samples containing 0.5% by weight nanoclay. In the three-point bending test, it was observed that the addition of 1% by weight of nanoclay increased the bending strength. It has been concluded that nanoclay additives increase mechanical properties in flax fiber-epoxy composites. It offers a valuable perspective for future environmental and industrial applications of natural fiber reinforced composites.
