Evaluation of Sediment Budget by using 210Pb, 137Cs and 7Be radionuclides

Project no. 223 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

The sediment budget provides a valuable tool for understanding and quantifying the mobilisation, transport and storage of sediment within the drainage basins. The sediment budget is to be sensitive indicator of a river basin’s response to environmental change. Traditional measurement techniques are frequently unable to meet the requirements and fallout radionuclides as 210Pb, 137Cs and 7Be have been shown to offer considerable potential for tracing the mobilization, transfer, redistribution and storage of soil and sediment within catchments and river systems. In this regards, the aim of the study is that the deposition of heavy metals carried along with the fine sediment particles along the Bakırçay River in the mouth of the river (Çandarlı Bay) is investigated with the chronological history. Sediment source is determined by using 7Be/137Cs activity concentrations in suspended sediments taken from the Bakırçay River.
