Project no. 819 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018
Summary
Başur Höyük, located east of the Upper Tigris Region and excavated between 2007-2017 within the scope of the Ilısu Dam HEPP Project, is understood to have had a different cultural development than other settlements in the region at the end of the 4th and beginning of the 3rd millennium BC. The project aims to reveal the general character of Başur Höyük Early Bronze Age pottery. In this way, a base has been created for detailed studies on this subject, which has a high original value. Başur Höyük settlement represents the Late Uruk/Early Bronze Age-I cultural features with a denser and stronger material culture compared to other settlements in the Upper Tigris Region with contemporary layers. This situation showed the necessity of making a new evaluation for both the Upper Tigris Region and Northern Mesopotamia, where the region is in intense interaction, with the new data obtained from the Başur Höyük excavations. There are two disciplines that the project feeds on. While the typological character of Başur Höyük Early Bronze Age pottery was revealed by using the methods of the discipline of archaeology, features such as production processes and physical structure were determined thanks to the archeometry discipline. This project will define the cultural change observed in Başur Höyük during the period under consideration and contribute to the archaeology of the region with an original and new study.
