Summary

In this study, the effects of various mulch materials on drainage, runoff and soil loss under rainfall simulator were investigated under laboratory conditions. Biochar, vermicompost and wheat straw were used as mulch materials. The experiments were conducted under controlled artificial rainfall with 9% slope, 100 mm/h rainfall intensity, Fulljet 50WSQ nozzle and clay loam soil. Under these conditions, different doses of biochar (1.25 - 2.50 - 5.00 t.da-1), vermicompost (1.25 - 2.50 - 5.00 t.da-1) and straw (0.25 - 0.50 - 1.00 t.da-1) mulch materials were applied by mixing and laying on the soil. The results showed that different mulch materials produced significant differences in drainage, runoff and soil loss. In particular, straw mulch improved drainage by reducing surface runoff, but also significantly reduced soil loss. It was also observed that when the application doses of straw mulch reached 0.5 t.da-1, runoff and soil loss were zero. Biochar and vermicompost mulches affected drainage and runoff less than straw, but significantly reduced soil loss. Furthermore, biochar and vermicompost, when applied as mulches, completely prevented runoff and soil loss at an application rate of 5.0 t.da-1. These findings emphasize the importance of mulch in erosion control and water management strategies. This study is expected to contribute to the improvement of erosion control methods and soil conservation strategies.
