Summary

This study aimed to investigate the risk of distal metallic particle embolization caused by microfragmentation during the placement of flow-diverting stents in intracranial aneurysm treatment. The hypothesis suggests that tortuosity of vascular structures and mechanical forces applied during endovascular procedures might lead to microfragmentation of the stent or catheter surfaces. These microfragments could explain signal void foci observed in post-procedure MRI scans in some cases.

A prototype vascular model mimicking human anatomy was used, simulating endovascular interventions in a controlled environment with physiological temperature. Fluids collected from these procedures were mixed with ballistic gel and analyzed using a 3 Tesla MRI system with the SWI sequence. Results supported the hypothesis of metallic microfragmentation, highlighting the need to reconsider treatment protocols and stent designs.
