Summary

Aim: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between children's and their parents' levels of HL and the child's physical activity level. Material and Method: The descriptive relational study was conducted in a public secondary school in Izmir between November 2021 and June 2022. The population of the study consisted of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th (10-14 age group) grade students and their parents studying in the secondary school in the 2021-2022 academic year (N=750). Participants who volunteered to participate in the research constituted the research sample (n=521) and approximately 70% of the population was reached. The data were collected with the “Descriptive Information Form”, “Health Literacy Scale for School Age Children (MLSS)”, “Adult Health Literacy Scale (MSFL)” and “Physical Activity Questionnaire (FAS)”. Permission was obtained from the ethics committee and the Provincial Directorate of National Education to conduct the study. The data were evaluated in the SPSS 20 program and the significance level was accepted as p˂0.05. Results: The mean age of the students was 11.61±1.13 and 54.9% of them were female students. The mean age of the parents was 39.44±7.32, and 89.4% of them were mothers. The median of the CSOY total score is 32.00, the median of the FAS total score is 26.24, and the median of the YSOY total score is 18.00. A positive and significant correlation was found between MLSS and FAS and SFL (r=0.352, 0.280 p˂0.05, respectively). There was a positive and significant relationship between YSFL and FAS and MLSS (r=0.442, 0.280 p˂0.05, respectively). There was a positive and significant relationship between YSFL and FAS and MLSS (r=0.442, 0.280 p˂0.05, respectively). There is a significant positive correlation between the body mass index (BMI) values of the students and the BMI values of the parents (r=0.348, p˂0.05). A significant inverse relationship was found between students' BMI values and MLSS and FAS (r=-0.283, -0.312 p˂0.05, respectively). A significant inverse relationship was found between the BMI values of the parents and FSFL, MLSS, and FAS (r=-0.123, - 0.046, -0.265 p˂0.05, respectively). Conclusion: The students' health literacy level was high and physical activity level was moderate, and a significant relationship was found between these two variables. A significant relationship was also found between parental health literacy and child health literacy and physical activity. The research showed that the BMI values of the students were affected by the parental BMI values. In addition, it can be said that as the level of self-evaluation of the students and the level of parental education increase, the BMI values of the students affect positively.

Key words: School-age child, health literacy, physical activity, parent
