Development of Functional Biodegradable Nanocrystal Magnesium Based Implant Material
Project no. 22503 · Status: Kapanmış · 2021
Summary

After biodegradable materials function in the body, they decompose in accordance with tissue development and disappear without harming the patient. Mg-alloys are the most promising materials in the production of implant materials (orthopedic tissues, jaw-tooth, stents, etc.) due to their similarity to bone. By producing biodegradable Mg/Mg-alloys at low cost and functionally, they can be integrated into high value-added, advanced technological applications. Particularly, the similarity to bone (modulus of elasticity, porous structure) is extremely important to meet bio-expectations. Commercially pure Mg has insufficient mechanical/corrosion resistance as a biodegradable implant material. Although these properties of Mg can be increased by alloying, different solutions may be needed due to the cost of alloying elements and their negative effects on toxicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability.

Instead of Mg-alloys, implant material will be developed by powder metallurgy method to meet bio-expectations (biocompatible, functional porous, elasticity modulus close to bone, increased mechanical and corrosion resistance) by improving the microstructural properties of pure-Mg (fine-grain refinement, nanocrystalline). As a result of the microstructure (nanocrystalline) changes of the powder through mechanical grinding (MM), almost all the properties of Mg, especially its mechanical properties, can be improved. In order to preserve these superior qualities gained by BC, TM-sintering must be done at low temperatures and in a very short time. This is not possible with the traditional sintering method. A unique sintering technique (I-FAST) integrated with BC, at low temperatures (200-400oC) and fast (1-15 min) will be used. I-FAST is essentially an electric field sintering technique and our university It was developed with the support of BAPs (16-MÜH-037, 14-MÜH-017). Additionally, a trace amount of graphene (≈‰1) that will not create a toxic effect will be mixed to increase the effect of I-FAST and microstructure strength. Sintering parameters, pressure, By keeping parameters such as temperature and time low; Functionally placed Mg powders were aimed to produce Mg at different pore levels along the cross section. Mg-based biodegradable porous implant material will be produced and in-vitro experiments will be carried out and a multidisciplinary study will be carried out.
