Project no. 23088 · Status: Kapanmış · 2021
Summary

Aim: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between university students' awareness of coronavirus (CA) and health literacy (HL).

Method: The sample of this descriptive relational study consisted of 345 students studying at a state university in Izmir between January and June 2022. Data were collected with the “Sociodemographic Information Form”, “Health Literacy” (HL) scale and “Coronavirus Awareness” (CA) scale.

Results: The total mean score obtained by the students from the HL scale was 108.09±18.81. In the regression model, 17% of the variables explained the HL level at a significant level. Being a woman increased 4.184 times, being a student in the field of health 3.592 times, and having a high CA increased 0.384 times. The mean total score of the CA scale was 60.8±13.44. A positive, moderately significant correlation was found between the HL and CA total scores. In the regression model, it was determined that 16% of the variables explained CA at a significant level. Being female and having a high HL level increased 4.742 times and 0.199 times significantly increased CA.

Conclusion: It was determined that the HL and CA levels of the students were high. A relationship was found between HL and CA levels. While the gender of the students made a difference on both HL and CA levels, the faculty of education made a difference on HL level, but it did not create a significant difference on CA.

Recommendations: HL levels may play a key role in the prevention of previously unknown infectious diseases such as Covid-19, as there is a significant relationship between HL and CA.
