Examining the Effect of Simulation-Based Education on the Development of Positive Birth Perception and the Adoption of a Natural Birth Approach

Project no. 23425 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022

Summary

The study was conducted using a randomized controlled quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest to investigate how simulation-based training affects the development of positive birth perception and natural birth approach in nursing students. Between September 2022 and June 2023, the study was conducted at the Ege University Faculty of Nursing Simulation Laboratory with 56 nursing students. The intervention group consisted of 28 students with hybrid simulation, while the control group of 28 students received video modeling. Data were collected with the Demographic Information Form, Natural Birth Approach Questionnaire, Student Satisfaction and Confidence in Learning Scale, Satisfaction with Education Methods Questionnaire, and Natural Birth Approach Clinical Skills Guide. Data were analyzed by Mann Whitney U test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, and Chi-square. The study revealed that both groups had significantly higher post-test natural birth knowledge scores than pre-test scores (p<0.001). After comparing the two training methods, there was no significant difference in knowledge (p>0.05). The students in the intervention group had more positive perspectives on natural birth after hybrid simulation compared to the video model. The scores of other scales in both groups were higher than the average, but no significant difference was found. The clinical skill scores in both groups were found to be significantly different. Based on the study's findings, hybrid simulation, and video model training significantly improved students' understanding of natural birth and their satisfaction and self-confidence. Also, hybrid simulation was more effective in natural birth approach skills. When planning training sessions to teach students natural birth techniques, utilizing the hybrid simulation method is advisable.
