Summary
It is essential to determine the pharmacological and toxicological effects of a chemical in order to suggest it as a drug candidate. In vitro toxicity tests are preferred to evaluate the toxicity of molecules at the early phases of drug development process because of their rapidness and thus reducing the time and cost loss. In vitro toxicity tests are also useful in understanding the mechanism of effects. In the present thesis, it is aimed to investigate the cytotoxic effects of two drug active substances (AN ve IN), currently used for some other purposes, on healthy human breast epithelial cells (MCF-10A) and breast cancer cells (MCF-7 BUS). As an in vitro cytotoxicity test, MTT test, which provides analysis in a short time and gives reliable results, was used. As a conclusion, AN ve IN molecules were found to have no cytotoxicity on healthy breast epithelial cells whereas significantly decreasing viability of breast cancer cells. IN molecule was found to cause cytotoxicity in breast cancer cells dose dependently. These two molecules seem to be promising as candidates in estrogen receptor positive breast cancer and further studies are needed to investigate their potential beneficial effects.
