An Inquiry on Family and Fertility in a Post-Transitional Society: The Case of Izmir

Project no. 940 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

The aim of this project is to reveal the motivations lying beneath the family formation and fertility behaviours of people in Izmir, which can be quoted as a post-transitional society. In this context, the theoretical framework of the study is drawn upon the Theory of Second Demographic Transition. The population of the research is composed of women, in fertile ages, who are living in Izmir. Quantitative data is gathered through semi-structured interviews conducted on 397 persons forming a representative sample and qualitative data is gathered through in-depth interviews conducted on 16 participants who represent diverging categories and accessed by a non-probabilistic sampling technique. These quantitative and qualitative data is analysed through statistical techniques and descriptive techniques, respectively. As a final analysing technique of merging the data, quantitative and qualitative data is analysed, interpreted and reported together. The findings of this research point out that, as far as they are coherent with the existing social norms, Izmir has its own terms as to the family formation and fertility behaviours.
