Chromium Removal from Synthetic Wastewater Using Yeast Cells Coated with Magnetite Nanoparticles

Project no. 23820 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022

Summary

Heavy metals (such as Ni, Cu, Fe, Cr, Zn, Co, Cd, Pb, Hg and Mn) are most common environmetal pollutants of air, soil and water[F.Sh.1] . The use of heavy metals for manufacturing products and consequent increase in the heavy metal content of the wastes have become one of the problems that continue to increase with the industrial revolution.

It is a known fact that heavy metals adversely affect human health and environment. Some heavy metals such as lead, copper, chromium, cadmium and mercury ions show toxicity even at trace ppm levels. Therefore, the identification of toxic metals in the biological and aquatic environment has become a vital need for appropriate remediation processes.

In this thesis, three different yeast strains (TEM YLB, TEM CS, TEM KS) previously isolated were used. Among these strains, the Y. lipolytica TEM YLB strain, to which highest load efficiency of magnetite nanoparticles, was selected for chromium removal studies from synthetic wastewater. The study demonstrated the success of the unmodified wild unique local yeast strain and magnetite-coated modified yeast strain in removing chromium from artificial wastewater. The project also determined the parameters, such as temperature and pH, that allowed optimal removal of chromium.
