Synthesis of Diatomite-Loaded κ-Carrageenan-Based Hydrogels and Investigation of Their Efficiency in the Removal of Strontium Ions
Project no. 32576 · Status: Kapanmış · 2024
Summary

Nuclear power plants are actively used worldwide for electricity generation. However, the radioactive wastes produced by these plants are considered hazardous pollutants. The release of radioactive elements into ecosystems has the potential to accumulate in animals and plants, which may lead to serious risks to human health and the environment.

Within the scope of this proposed project, it is aimed to synthesize diatomite-loaded κ-carrageenan-based hydrogels with different concentrations and to use them as adsorbents for the removal of strontium ions from aqueous solutions.

The synthesized materials will be characterized using XRD, SEM-EDX, FT-IR, XPS, and TGA techniques. In the batch adsorption experiments for strontium removal, the effects of various parameters such as pH, concentration, contact time, and temperature will be investigated. The adsorption data obtained will be evaluated for their conformity with isotherm models such as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R). Based on the contact time studies, the adsorption kinetic model will be determined. Thermodynamic parameters including standard enthalpy, standard entropy, and Gibbs free energy will be calculated using the results of temperature-dependent experiments. In addition, desorption studies will be conducted to investigate the reusability of the adsorbent, and optimum operating conditions will be determined.

According to the literature survey conducted, no study has been found that investigates the synthesis of diatomite-enriched κ-carrageenan physical hydrogels and their potential as adsorbents for the removal of Strontium(II) ions. Therefore, it is believed that the successful implementation of this original project will make a significant scientific contribution to the literature.
