Enhancement of the X-band Electromagnetic Shielding Effectiveness of Carbon/Epoxy Composite Materials with the Addition of Carbon Nanostructures

Project no. 22263 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2021

Summary

In recent years, with the development of electronic systems and communication networks, studies aiming to reduce electromagnetic (EM) interference have intensified. Besides the aviation industry, textile products, mobile devices, etc. In applications, the search for both electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (SE) and lightweight and efficient materials has increased. Especially in the aviation, space, maritime and defense sectors, applications such as air traffic control, military land, sea and space communications, civil and military precision approach radars in the X-band (8-12.5 GHz frequency range) have gained importance. Additionally, in case of uncontrolled exposure to microwaves, some side effects may occur on employees.

In this proposed project, carbon nanoparticles (graphite, graphene, etc.) were added to the composites in order to improve the electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMI SE) properties of carbon yarn reinforced epoxy matrix prepreg (film composite) materials used especially in the aviation and space industry. This process was carried out by the dip coating method. In particular, the change in KE values of the composites in the X-band was examined. Additionally, electrical conductivity was also measured. Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) tests were carried out to examine the change in mechanical properties. UV-vis characterization was realized to determine the dispersion properties of nanoparticles within the resin. ATR-FTIR and XPS for chemical structure, and SEM for material morphology were also carried out.

When the studies in the literature are examined, it is seen that the addition of nanoparticles to the composite structure is achieved through coating on the yarn or matrix modification. In the current project, the addition of nanoparticles was carried out by dip coating, a different method. The main aim was to improve the EMI SE property of the composite, especially in the X-band. Additionally, changes in the electrical and mechanical properties of the composite were also examined.
