Summary

Participation of bees in pollination ensures the continuity of plant populations and increases the productivity of fruits. Bumblebees, which is known for their pollination activities over the years, are one of the most valuable and important bee species. In this study, immune system cells were analyzed in the metamorphosis period (larvae, pupae and adult) of Bombus terrestris workers. The types and amounts of hemocytes, which are the important elements of the immune system, in the developmental process were investigated. The presence of prohemocyte, plasmatocyte, granulocyte, spherulocyte and oenocytoid cells were detected in all 3 stages. According to statistical comparisons, in the prohemocyte cell type, the area values of the pupal hemocyte are statistically smaller than the area values of both larval and adult stages. In the granulocyte cell type while the hemocyte cell area values of the larval stage are statistically greater than the cell area values of both pupal and adult stages, the cell area values of the pupal stage are also statistically greater than the adult stage. In the spherulocyte cell type, while the cell area values of the larval stage are statistically greater than the cell area values of both pupal and adult stages, the cell area values of the pupal stage are statistically greater than the adult stage cell area values. In the plasmatocyte cell type, adult stage hemocyte cell area values are statistically greater than both larva and pupal cell area values. In the oenocytoid cell type, the hemocyte cell area values of the larval stage are statistically greater than the cell area values of both pupal and adult stages. On the other hand, when the hemocyte numbers in 1mm3 hemolymph were compared statistically, it was detected that there was a significant difference between the three developmental stages and it was determined that the amount of hemocyte in the larval stage was statistically higher than the amount of hemocyte in pupae and adults. Also, it was determined that the amount of hemocyte in the adult stage was statistically significantly higher than the amount of hemocyte in the pupal stage. This study shows that both similarities and differences in some parameters in hemocytes between bumblebee developmental stages depend on their functions of these cells.
