Project no. 33096 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2025
Summary

This project aims to examine the Nestorian Uprising and its resolution in light of documents from the Turkish Diplomatic Archives, focusing on the diplomatic, military, and international dimensions of the uprising that took place in the Hakkâri region in 1924. The Nestorians were a Christian community living particularly in the regions of Hakkâri, Mosul, and Urmia from the late Ottoman period onward, and they sought to preserve and expand their status under the protection of Western powers, especially Britain. The Nestorian Uprising, which broke out during the period in which the Mosul Question was being addressed in the context of the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, created a serious crisis not only in terms of internal security but also within the framework of international relations.

The study will examine the main causes and development of the uprising, as well as the military and diplomatic strategies pursued by the founding government in response to the events, within the framework of the regional and global political dynamics of the period. Particular attention will be paid to the conflict between Türkiye’s efforts to secure its national borders and Britain’s interests in the region, and to the extent to which this conflict became a decisive factor in the process of resolving the uprising. In this context, the study will analyze the causes of the Nestorian Uprising within a historical continuum extending from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Türkiye, together with the military and diplomatic measures taken to suppress it. At the same time, by evaluating the attitudes of international actors such as Britain and the Kingdom of Iraq, the study will reveal the diplomatic gains achieved by Türkiye, as well as the difficulties it encountered in the aftermath of the uprising.

The research will be conducted on the basis of official correspondence, government reports, foreign policy documents, and military assessments from the period preserved in the Turkish Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, British Foreign Office records, contemporary newspapers, and academic literature will be used in order to provide a multidimensional analysis. By revealing the impact of the Nestorian Uprising on Türkiye’s early foreign policy and its connection with the Mosul Question, the study aims to contribute to a better understanding of how Türkiye’s national security and border policies were shaped in the early Republican period.

The events will be examined chronologically, and the emergence, course, and resolution of the uprising will be analyzed within a cause-and-effect framework. In this process, archival documents will be evaluated through content analysis. The statements contained in diplomatic and official documents will be interpreted in relation to the political discourse of the period, while the concepts, actors, and diplomatic initiatives appearing in the documents will be classified through thematic coding. Furthermore, the attitudes, crisis perceptions, and resolution strategies of Türkiye and Britain will be analyzed comparatively, with the position of the Kingdom of Iraq also considered at a secondary level.

Keywords: Nestorian Revolt, Mosul Question, Hakkâri, Border Security, Iraqi Mandate.
