Project no. 826 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018
Summary
Adolescence is a period of development in which is physical, emotional, and social changes emerge and adaptation to these changes can be stressful for both adolescents and their parents. The purpose of the study was twofold; to implement a parent training program for parents of adolescents and to evaluate the effectiveness of this program on different dimensions of parent-adolescent relationships and communication skills of parents. In this study, an experimental design with intervention and control groups was used. The 6-session training for parents generally consisted of activities aimed at developing their communication skills and their relationships with their children. The sample consisted of 61 parents who have adolescent children and worked at Ege University. Parents completed a questionnaire packet consisted of demographics, “Parent Success Indicator”, and “Coping with Problem Behaviour Scale”. The findings showed that pre-test scores of parent’s communication, time use, satisfaction, trust, information needs, and negative coping with problem behaviors scores in the intervention group differed from post-test scores. There was no statistically significance results in the control group between pre-test and post test. Therefore, it is recommended to increase the number of parent training programs for parents of children at different age groups. Besides, it is suggested that future studies should focus on more comprehensive educational programs which would provide enriched findings.
