Measurement of Stimulation Distance in Facial Nerve Monitoring in Parotid Surgery
Project no. 21093 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020
Summary
Facial nerve palsy is one of the most feared complications of parotid gland surgery for both the patient and the surgeon. Facial nerve paralysis can cause cosmetic and functional morbidity by affecting all motor functions of half of the face, causing ocular complications, affecting eating and drinking functions, and as a result, it can seriously affect the quality of life. Facial nerve monitoring provides convenience to the surgeon in parotid gland surgery and can give an idea about the prognosis. The aim of this study was to assess the minimum excitation threshold and evaluate the distance to the nerve. This would help the surgeon especially in extracapsular dissection and similar minimally invasive cases where the facial nerve is not routinely dissected.
