Project no. 20244 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019
Summary
Examining exercise behavior and factors that impact exercise participation is a critical issue. Understanding the psychological foundations of physical activity is vital for a healthy world. It is well known that physical activity has significant effects on psychological health. Flourishing means that one's life experience is going well. It also indicates that the individual's mental health is at a high level. Thus, researchers have become increasingly interested in the concept of flourishing. However, there has not been sufficient study about flourishing in exercise settings. More studies are needed to understand this concept. Hence, the aim of this study is to determine how achievement goals, participation motivation and self-perception levels in physical activity environments affect the well-being of young adults. The general purpose of the study is also to examine the psychological structure of young adult individuals' well-being in physical activity environments. In the study carried out for this purpose, the sample consisted of 580 young adult exercisers ranging in age from 18 to 40 years from fitness centers in Bornova, Buca, Karşıyaka, Konak, Bayraklı, Çiğli ve Balçova towns of Izmir, Turkey. Participants completed personal information form, Psychological Well-Being Scale, A 2x2 Achievement Goals Questionnaire for Sport - 2x2 AGQ-S, Situational Motivation Scale, the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire, respectively. It has been determined that male’s performance-approach, performance-avoidance, external regulation, and amotivation scores were higher than females' and in contrast females' global esteem was higher than the male’s. The results of correlation and regression analysis indicated flourishing was linked to global esteem, mastery-approach goal, and intrinsic motivation. These findings demonstrate the importance of including measures of global esteem, mastery-approach goal, and intrinsic motivation when evaluating well-being in physical activıty contexts.
