Synthesis and Structural Elucidation of a Trimellitic Anhydride Derivative
Project no. 33165 · Status: Kapanmış · 2025
Summary

In drug development studies, derivatization approaches involving the phthalimide ring have led to the identification of compounds exhibiting anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiglucosidase, antimalarial, anti-angiogenic, antitubercular, anticonvulsant, and analgesic activities. In our previous study, a methoxy-substituted N-phenyl-2-phthalimidoethanesulfonamide derivative was found to exhibit antimicrobial activity comparable to gentamicin.

Within this scope, in the present study, a conjugate of trimellitic anhydride with 2-aminoethanesulfonamide (taurine) was synthesized, followed by functionalization of the carboxylic acid group as an amide using aniline. The final compound was synthesized in two steps, and its structure was elucidated by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and IR spectroscopic methods.

As a result of the successful completion of this project, an undergraduate student from the Faculty of Bioengineering gained insight into the perspective of a different discipline, observed the preparatory stages of a scientific project, developed research and laboratory discipline, and acquired hands-on experience by actively participating in all stages of a scientific study.

Keywords: Taurine, trimellitic anhydride, synthesis.
