Sustainable Crisis Communication in Disaster Management: An Analysis and Model Proposal on Disaster Management

Project no. 29678 · Status: Kapanmış · 2023

Summary

The need for crisis communication during a disaster period is important because uncertainty increases when people receive different messages from different sources about an event/situation that occurs unexpectedly and that they have not seen or heard of. Although crises are unexpected situations, they are issues that can often be overcome with minor damage if institutions have crisis management plans (Eğinli, 2014, p.33). In addition, sustainability of crisis communication requires a separate communication plan and organization. Because it covers a process before, during and after the crisis. The situation encountered especially during disaster periods can cause serious damage if there is not enough preparation. For this reason, every moment of the crisis process needs to be handled in detail and carefully.

The study will systematically compile and analyze disaster-period sustainable crisis communication studies conducted in the last five years in the world, and meta-thematic analysis will be carried out in articles containing models prepared in three different countries (America, Japan and Finland). The model of the research is systematic review and meta-thematic analysis. Data collection will be done by scanning all-accessible articles between January 2018 and January 2023 in three separate databases (Scopus, Web of Science and Sage) by performing advanced searches with keywords (e.g. crisis communication; disaster, sustainable communication). In the research method, two researchers will independently examine each article in detail and select the articles that best suit the essence of the research. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for qualitative, cross-sectional, prevalence studies will be used in the selection of articles, and the PRISMA Statement checklist will be selected in writing the research report. In the findings of the research, a first search will be made with keywords in the database, and the second analysis will be eliminated by looking at the title, keyword and summary result. The latest articles obtained will be tabulated with the meta-thematic analysis method and a sustainable crisis communication plan model will be created in addition to the Ege University Disaster plan.

Keywords: Disaster, Risk, Crisis Communication, Sustainability
