Summary

Today, fossil fuels are widely used as an energy source. The use of fossil fuels has devastating effects on the environment. It is necessary to protect the environment during energy production. The use of clean and renewable energy sources is very important for our nature. When hydrogen is used as an energy source, clean by-products such as water and water vapor do not pollute the environment. Therefore, it is in the category of clean and renewable energy source. It is possible to realize hydrogen production at more affordable costs. In this study, hydrogen production was carried out by hydrolysis method using different solutions in a cost-effective way. Aluminum, one of the most abundant metals in the earth's crust, was used as a material. While hydrogen production is carried out by aluminum hydrolysis, the continuity of hydrogen production is ensured by using different alkaline solutions, since hydrogen production is interrupted by the oxide layer formed on the aluminum. Milling of Al-NaCl powders was carried out using a QM-3SP4 planetary ball mill with a ball-to-powder ratio of 20:1 and a rotation speed of 200 rpm. When aluminum is used in powder form, it positively affects the results of hydrogen production by increasing the area to react for hydrolysis as the grain size decreases and therefore the surface area increases In the study, water, 1 M KOH and Mg(OH)2 solutions, 0.1, 0.5, 1 M NaOH solutions, 35-65oC temperature range, 0% to 15% NaCl addition, 5 to 15 h aluminum milled time were investigated. Microstructures of the milled powders were characterized by SEM and elemental analyzes were characterized by EDX. Looking at the results, it was observed that the hydrogen production rate increased as the alkali solution concentration, temperature, NaCl addition rate and milling time increased. The best hydrogen production value was seen at 65oC, 15% NaCl, 15 h milling time and 1 M NaOH solution.
