Determination of Agronomic and Fiber Quality Properties in Some Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) Varieties in Different Years

Project no. 902 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018

Summary

In this project, 12 commercial cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) varieties, which are widely grown in the Aegean Region, were raised in Bornova conditions in the 2017 and 2018 cotton growing seasons. In both production years, some vegetable and fiber quality characteristics of the varieties were determined and the differences between the two-year values were revealed. In addition, the correlations between the investigated characteristics of the cultivars were determined. The values obtained in terms of all agronomic and fiber quality characteristics examined in the project showed significant decreases in the second year of the project, namely 2018 production year. The reason for these decreases was attributed to the fact that the months of May and June, seen in the entire Aegean Region, were rather rainy compared to the long-term average and the previous trial year. In 2018 production year, the second year of the project, 67.6 mm and 29.8 mm of precipitation fell to the trial location in May and June, respectively. This precipitation amount was determined to be considerably higher than the precipitation averages of May and June 2017, the first year of the project (27.0 mm and 1.8 mm, respectively) and the precipitation averages of May and June for many years (25.4 mm and 7.5 mm, respectively). As a result of the project, it has been revealed that high rainfall in the planting period and the first vegetative period of the cotton plant has negative effects. Key words: Cotton, G. hirsutum L., yield, yield components and fiber properties.
