Project no. 22159 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020
Summary
In recent years it can be stated that translator identities come into the focus of several studies as well fictional stories, so that the translator is portrayed as a subject more frequently. This tendency can be correlated with the paradigm shift to the cultural turn within cultural studies and innovative approaches to culture, identity and literary texts. With the cultural turn the focus on the translation process has changed. From the 1980s onward, instead of the source text that was seen as an inviolable factor the definition, the relevance and attitude of the translator gradually becomes the subject of investigation. Academic studies not only contribute to a noticeable visibility of the translator, but also have positive effects on the assessment of translation in general terms. As Bachmann-Medick points out, literature as one of the very relevant discourses and products of culture is no more regarded from a hermeneutic perspective and consequently as an interpretable object. Rather, literature comes into view with respect to its social and intercultural interaction with spaces. In this context, two approaches deserve attention. Clifford Geertz and Stephen Greenblatt emphasize the textual dimensions of culture and demonstrate the relevance of the relationship between culture and text. The traces of this paradigm shift, that offers innovative perspectives in defining ‘culture’, can be also grasped in fictional texts, which highlight translator figures. In this way, it gets possible to see to what extent fictional translator figures are influenced by this change. The aim of this project is to investigate the fictional configuration of translator figures that constitute a circulation and interactive space between cultures and texts. In this respect, the novel Kan ve Gül (Blood and Rose) by Alper Canıgüz, first published in 2017, is analysed. Based on this novel it is illustrated, how contemporary literature reflects translator figures who are often characterized physically and psychologically unstable and weak in fictional works of literature and also movies. Another aspect that becomes relevant in the analysis is the question, how fictional texts conceptualize and cerate translators and their professional identities within the fictional realm. The results of the qualitative study is analysed in a descriptive way. Thereby, the protagonist of this novel is explored with reference to approaches of translation studies, cultural studies along with narrative theory.
