Evaluation of Agricultural Wastes as Biosorbent for Boron Removal from Water

Project no. 21911 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020

Summary

Due to the increasing consumption depending on the world population, environmental problems come to the fore. Among the current problems, the disposal of solid waste is shown as one of the important problems. In addition to environmental pollution caused by solid wastes, ecological problems are seen in water resources. Boron element is threaten living life by polluting water resources in high concentrations. Especially water resources, which are used as irrigation water in agricultural lands and contain high concentrations of boron, affect plant production efficiency. For this reason, many boron removal studies have been carried out. In most of the existing studies, adsorption method, which is one of the innovative methods, was used. However, adsorption studies performed with chemical adsorbent cause extra pollution. A new perspective has been created by using agricultural wastes as adsorbent in order to prevent new waste generation. In the literature, there is not enough research on the removal of boron from water by biosorbents produced by slow pyrolysis, especially from agricultural waste. In this project, olive and corn pruning wastes with high biochar conversion potential were used. Parameters of pyrolysis temperature and gas flowrate in biochar production; modification time, type of reactant, concentration and agent ratio in the modification process; biosorbent amount, pH, temperature and concentration in equilibrium tests; and temperature, concentration, biosorbent type and mixing rate in the kinetic tests were studied.
