Summary

Geopolymer is an alternative inorganic construction material obtained by mixing suitable aluminosilicate sources with alkali activator in a way to provide certain molecular ratios.

In this study, the effects of different water reducing admixtures such as lignin, polycarboxylate and melamine naphthalene on the workability, setting time, high temperature resistance and strength of geopolymer mortar/paste mixtures produced with fly ash and blast furnace slag were investigated. The microstructure and fresh properties of the mixtures were determined by SEM/EDS, XRD and rheological analysis.

The flow of fly ash-based mortar mixtures was improved slightly upon adding polycarboxylate ether-based admixtures at low dosages, compared to that of the control mixture. However, the compressive strength reduced by 6-15%.

In the mixtures obtained with slag, it was observed that all water reducing admixture-bearing mixtures did not exceed the flow and compressive strength values of the counterpart mixtures prepared with water. The same behavior was observed in the fly ash-bearing geopolymer mixtures.
