Heavy Metal Pollution History in Marine Sediments from Black Sea Derived from 210Pb and 137Cs Chronology

Project no. 20154 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020

Summary

Sediments are a natural archive recording environmental changes and sediment dating allows these changes to be assessed chronologically. The 210Pb method has been used to date sediment cores for more than 50 years to study ecosystem changes over the last century. To validate the 210Pb method, 137Cs is widely applied as an independent dating method.

Türkiye is surrounded by seas on three sides; especially the Istanbul and Dardanelles Straits, which are the only routes connecting the Black Sea to other seas, have heavy ship traffic and pose a high risk for environmental pollution (ship accidents, especially oil-tankers). Although heavy metal pollution has been demonstrated in various scientific studies carried out so far in and around the Bosphorus, only surface sediments have been studied and no detailed sediment dating with 210Pb and 137Cs in deep sea sediments has been carried out so far. In this study, heavy metal pollution and sedimentation rate in marine sediments in the Bosphorus and Black Sea offshore were investigated by 210Pb and 137Cs chronology.

In this study, heavy metal "Cu, Zn, As, Ni, Cr, Cr, Sn, Pb" concentrations of the dated sediment cores were assessed according to US EPA norms, Enrichment Factor (EF) and Geo-Accumulation Index .A database has been built for the environmental changes in the Bosphorus and Black Sea coasts in the last 50 years which can be used for building a sustainable coast management system.
