Synthesis and Characterization of Polyamic acid/Clay Nanocomposites via In-situ Polymerization Method
Project no. 21599 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020
Summary
In recent years, polymer-clay nanocomposites have attracted a lot of attention both in industry and research. This is mainly because it shows remarkable improvements in material properties when compared to pure polymer or conventional micro/macro composites. These improvements can be listed as an increase in strength and heat resistance, a decrease in gas permeability and flammability, and a decrease in the degradation times of biodegradable polymers. In this projest, polyamic acid-clay nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization using monomer-modified montmorillonite clay mineral. For this purpose, first of all, montmorillonite mineral (MMT) was modified with 4,4'-Oxidianiline (ODA) monomer according to the cation exchange process (ODA-MMT). After determining the optimum solvent, time and temperature conditions for the synthesis of polyamic acid (PAA), PAA clay nanocomposites were prepared at different clay percentages (1-2-3-4-5%). Structural and morphological characterization of pure clay, modified clay and nanocomposites by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Gel Permeability Chromatography (GPC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG/DTG) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) methods has been carried out. In the results obtained, it was observed that PAA polymerized between the layers and the clay layers were in an exfoliated/intercalated structure in the polymer matrix. According to the XRD results, the best distribution was obtained for 1% clay.
